REDLANDS, Calif. (KABC) -- A Redlands teacher has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a child, authorities confirmed.

On Sunday, officers responded to Elvin Vereau's home in the Orangecrest neighborhood of Riverside "for a reported family disturbance," the Riverside Police Department said in a statement. "During the investigation, they learned that a female juvenile had been sexually abused by Mr. Vereau over several years."

Detectives launched a follow-up investigation that led to Vereau's arrest Tuesday on multiple sexual abuse charges, police said. He was being held on $2 million bail.

Officer Ryan J. Railsback, a spokesman for the Police Department, said the victim was under the age of 10.

Vereau, a temporary Special Academic Instructor at Citrus Valley High School, has been employed with the Redlands Unified School District since July 2013.

According to the district, he was placed on administrative leave after officials learned about his arrest. In a statement, Superintendent Juan Cabral said the district is cooperating with the investigation.

"We appreciate the swift action taken by the Riverside Police Department and are committed to ensuring that any student who may have been affected receives the support and services they need," Cabral said.

Detectives believe there could be more victims.

"The suspect's a teacher, he's around lots of kids," Railsback said. "And even though he works at a high school and our victim is a child, a minor, there could be some more victims who have not come forward."

Vereau is scheduled to appear in court Friday for an arraignment on five felony counts.
