NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man accused of stabbing a woman to death was shot and killed by police officers outside of North Hollywood home on Friday afternoon -- just feet away from an elementary school playground.
Los Angeles police responded to a report of domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon just before 1 p.m. at a home on Beck Avenue near Arminta Street.
When officers arrived, a domestic violence incident was in progress, according to LAPD. Officers found a female victim with multiple stab wounds.
Officers opened fire on a man who was near the female victim, LAPD said. The man -- who they describe as the domestic violence suspect -- and the woman were taken to the hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.
AIR7 video from above the scene shows a pool of blood and a knife on the ground.
The shooting happened while students at nearby Arminta Street Elementary School were outside on the playground. The students said they ran inside when they heard the shots, and the school went into lockdown.
"We were playing and then the bell rang and then I went to get my stuff and all we heard was just two shots and then everybody started running," said 3rd grader Richie Garcia.
No one at the school or any officers were injured, LAPD said.
The crime scene unfolded right where parents normally pick up their children from school. Pick-up was moved to the front of the school as the investigation continued.
"I was kind of worried because one of my granddaughters, she's very sensitive. But she was the one who was here on the corner, so she saw everything. So right now she's... we tried to cool her down because she's very... she had like a panic attack," said Magie Pac. "The school called us and they let us know what was going on, and it was good, very blessed. The community here acts very fast, even the cops, the cops came so fast."
"But I was kind of surprised. I've never heard anything. I grew up in the area, same with my siblings; they've gone to this school, too. Never had a message like that, so it was kind of interesting," said parent Cristal Serrano.
The investigation into the deadly incident is ongoing. It's unclear what exactly led up to the initial stabbing and what officers encountered when they were face-to-face with the stabbing suspect. Investigators were interviewing neighbors and witnesses.
