SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police shot and injured a suspect early Sunday morning at a liquor store in South Los Angeles.

The incident occurred at about 1:10 a.m. near the intersection of West Jefferson Boulevard and 9th Avenue after officers came into contact with a suspect armed with a firearm, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to LAPD, officers were conducting extra patrol in the liquor store after receiving a call for a possible burglary suspect, and while inside, they came across 33- year-old Malik Salaah, "who appeared to be concealing a firearm on his person."

"As the officers attempted to detain Salaah, he removed a firearm from his waistband, resulting in an officer-involved shooting," LAPD said in a statement. "Salaah fired multiple rounds at the officers while inside the store and as he exited, before fleeing on foot."

Police said the suspect ran for about two blocks before he was taken into custody.

Salaah had been struck by gunfire, according to LAPD. He was taken to the hospital where he remains hospitalized in stable condition.

No other injuries were reported.

Salaah was absentee booked for the attempted murder of a peace officer. An unloaded 9mm pistol with a seated high-capacity magazine was recovered at the scene, police said.

LAPD's Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators responded to the scene and are investigating the police shooting.
