EAGLE ROCK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has closed a Subway restaurant in Eagle Rock after workers raised the alarm about a rat infestation.
Restaurant workers, who held a protest Thursday night, say they've been complaining to the owner about the rats for the last year.
The employees say they have found live and dead rats, droppings, and bites taken out of food.
They are demanding that the store be professionally cleaned, and that they be compensated for lost wages due to the closure.
"The point is to hear workers' voices and hopefully they understand they have to do the right thing. Sometimes they prefer to save money, but they are risking the health and the life of employees and customers, too," said Maria Maldonado, field director with the California Fast Food Workers Union.
The health department closed the store on Wednesday.
Eyewitness News has reached out to Subway and currently awaiting a response.
