CHERRY VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- One person is dead and one person is hurt after a crash involving a Riverside County sheriff's deputy in Cherry Valley on Saturday.
According to California Highway Patrol, a 41-year-old deputy from the Cabazon Station was responding to a call for service with emergency lights and sirens on just after 10 a.m., driving westbound on Cherry Valley Boulevard in his Ford Explorer patrol vehicle.
That's when a Tesla Model 3 made a left turn from Roberts Street onto Cherry Valley -- into the deputy's path. The deputy then slammed into the Tesla.
The 21-year-old driver of the Tesla, identified by CHP as Gavin Hinkey, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 20-year-old female passenger from Cherry Valley was taken to the hospital with major injuries.
CHP said the deputy was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash and suffered minor injuries.
CHP investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. The investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing.

As for the call the deputy was responding to, an assault with a deadly weapon was reported in the 1000 block of California Street in Calimesa just before 10 a.m. At the scene, deputies located evidence of a shooting, but there were no reported injuries.
A search warrant was served in the 400 block of Nicolet Street in Banning, in connection with the investigation into the shooting. In Banning, one suspect was taken into custody.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
